Christmas Tree Safety This Holiday Season
Christmas in Northern Michigan is a magical time of year. From the decorated streets to the local Christmas tree farms, it really does feel like we live in a Hallmark movie! As you are making your final decisions between a natural or artificial Christmas tree, here are a few ways to ensure you practice Christmas tree safety.
When you pick a natural tree, ensure you prepare the base properly before putting it in the stand.
Unless you cut the tree down yourself (legally…), the base needs to be trimmed to ensure it can drink water effectively! Christmas trees that have been cut down and set aside will dry on the base and can prevent water from moving up the trunk safely. Before you put your new addition in its base, make sure to take an inch or two off the bottom so it has a fresh leg to stand on!
Live trees are very thirsty; water them daily!
Did you know that an average Christmas tree will drink several quarts of water a day? Even if you don’t think the tree needs it, make it a habit to add water to the base daily. This will keep it fresh and hydrated, ensuring it is more resistant to damage from wires and heat sources.
Keep your tree (real or fake) away from heaters, heat sources, and high-traffic areas.
Just like we discussed in Fire Prevention Month, clutter around heat sources are a recipe for disaster. Trees are no different! When picking the perfect place for your tree, make sure it is more than three feet from heat sources such as boilers and heaters, and several more feet away from fireplaces and stoves. Wherever you put it, be wise that it’s not impeding traffic or causing potential safety issues as well!
Be wise when selecting lights and decoration!
Everyone used to love Mamaw’s classic bubble lights, but keeping them in the family for fifty years may cause more harm than good! As you are bringing out the lights this year, ensure you inspect wires carefully and dispose of any strands that have frays or damage. Sparks are a much bigger concern when dealing with natural trees!
In everything, be wise and enjoy your family this holiday season! Should anything happen, or you have any questions going into the holiday season or about Christmas tree safety, we are your trusted, local professionals, 24/7.
